When the child's passport expires, you can apply for a new normal passport or an identity card, which is perfectly sufficient as an identification document within the EU. Children's passports can no longer be applied for or extended.

The children's passport will no longer be issued, amended or extended from 01.01.2024. For you as parents of children under the age of 12, this eliminates the need to apply for or renew a children's passport every year.

If your child still has a valid children's passport, this ID document can continue to be used until it expires. If the place of residence information contained in the child's passport becomes invalid before it expires, for example because the child has moved, this does not affect the validity of the child's passport. A change of place of residence may no longer be updated in the child's passport after 01.01.2024.

You can then apply for a normal passport for your child. This is valid for a maximum of 6 years for persons under the age of 24. When traveling within the European Union (EU) and to Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Turkey, an identity card is sufficient for the child. For destinations outside the EU, a passport is generally required.

The legal guardians (usually the parents) are entitled to apply.
