Have you had a child outside of a hospital or other obstetric facility (home birth)? Then you must report the birth to the relevant registry office.
The birth of a child must be reported to the registry office responsible for the place of birth.
If your child is born in a hospital or other facility where obstetric care is provided, this facility will be responsible for registering the birth. In this case, you should find out from the maternity facility in good time which documents you need to bring with you to the delivery date.
If the birth does not take place in a hospital or other facility where obstetric care is provided (home birth), the birth must be registered in person by a parent with custody at the registry office within one week. If the parents are unable to register the birth, the birth must be registered by another person who was present at the birth or who is aware of the birth from their own knowledge.
You will need the following documents:
- for parents who are married to each other
- Birth certificates of the parents
- Marriage certificate or a certified printout from the marriage register
- for parents who are not married to each other
- Birth certificate of the mother
- if paternity has already been recognized:
- Declaration of acknowledgment of paternity and the mother's declaration of consent
- Birth certificate of the father
- if applicable, the declaration of custody
- identity card, passport or a recognized passport replacement document of the parents
- a certificate of birth issued by a doctor, midwife or maternity nurse, if they were present at the birth
A marriage certificate must also be submitted if the marriage is now divorced or the husband is deceased.
As the parent with custody, you can report the birth of your child. If the parents are unable to report the birth, the birth can also be reported by another person who was present at the birth or is aware of the birth from their own knowledge.
There is no charge for registering a birth at the registry office.
Administrative fees are charged for issuing a birth certificate, which vary depending on the federal state.
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the fee for issuing a birth certificate is currently EUR 15.00.
The processing time varies from region to region and depends on the individual case.
The birth of your child must be reported to the registry office responsible for the place of birth within one week.
The day of birth is not included when calculating the notification period.
If your child is stillborn, the notification must be made no later than the third working day after the birth.
Birth certificates can be issued after the birth has been recorded in the register of births.
