If you receive social assistance or basic income support, you will be supported during pregnancy and maternity leave.
As a recipient of social assistance or basic income support, you will be supported by the social welfare office during pregnancy and maternity if you do not have health insurance. You will receive the normal health insurance benefits:
- medical treatment and care
- Support from midwives
- Medication, dressings and remedies
If necessary, you will receive care in inpatient facilities. If you need care at home and your family is unable to provide care, the costs of home care will also be covered on a pro rata basis. However, this depends on the level of care.

The competent social welfare institution will provide information on the documents required in individual cases.
Healthcare assistance is provided to people who do not have statutory or adequate private health insurance, for whom the provision of benefits via the health insurance fund (in accordance with the Fifth Social Security Code) is not an option and who cannot reasonably be expected to raise the funds for the necessary assistance from their income and assets.
There are no specific statutory deadlines for submitting or processing applications for healthcare assistance under SGB XII. However, it is important to submit the application as soon as possible as soon as the need is known, as the social welfare provider can only issue a treatment certificate once the need is known.
