If you would like to look after a child or several children outside the household of the legal guardian on a regular basis and for a fee, you generally need permission to do so. You can apply for this from the relevant youth welfare office.
Children between the ages of 0 and 14 can be looked after in child day care. You need a child day care permit if you would like to look after a child or several children outside the household of the legal guardian for part of the day and for more than 15 hours a week for more than 3 months in return for payment.
The permit for child day care
- is issued by the local youth welfare office,
- is limited to 5 years,
- may be subject to additional conditions,
- authorizes you to care for up to 5 other children present at the same time.
- Impeccable extended police clearance certificate according to § 72a SGB VIII
- Measles protection
- Health certificate (renewed every 5 years)
- Proof of qualification as a childminder
You will be granted permission if you are suitable for child day care. This can be assumed if
- You are characterized by your personality, professional competence and willingness to cooperate with legal guardians and other childminders,
- you have child-friendly premises,
- you have a good knowledge of the requirements of child day care. You must have acquired this knowledge in qualified training courses.
You can apply for a care permit at the responsible youth welfare office, submit the following documents here:
- Completed qualification as a childminder
- Police clearance certificate
- Medical certificate (for protection against measles)
The child-friendly premises will then be checked by means of a joint inspection with the local youth welfare office.

- from the age of three, priority must be given to care in a childcare facility
- a person who wishes to care for a child or several children outside the household of the legal guardian for part of the day and for more than 15 hours per week for more than 3 months in return for payment requires a permit; in accordance with the legal basis in Book Eight of the German Social Code (SGB VIII)
