If you are currently receiving housing benefit, you can apply for higher housing benefit as a subsidy towards your housing costs if

  • your total income has decreased,
  • the number of household members to be taken into account has increased or
  • your rent or housing costs have increased.

These changes can, but do not necessarily have to, lead to an increase in housing benefit.

Erforderliche Unterlagen

In addition to the application form to be completed (application for an increase), you must also submit further documents as proof (of the changes that have occurred). Further documents may include in particular

  • Proof of income (salary certificate, pension statement, etc.),
  • Documents relating to the rent increase,
  • Documents on the encumbrance of the residential property you use, if you are its owner.
  • Proof of changes to the household members to be taken into account.

Voraussetzungen

Prerequisites for an increase in housing benefit:

  • a reduction in total income of more than 10%,
  • an increase in the number of household members to be taken into account,
  • an increase of more than 10% in the rent or charges to be taken into account less the amounts for relief on heating costs.

There are no fees.

Verfahrensablauf

To receive higher housing benefit, you must apply for an increase at the housing benefit office responsible for your area.

Once the application has been processed, you will receive a notification from there.

The increase takes effect from the month in which the application is submitted. A retroactive increase in housing benefit is generally not possible.

Hinweise

If your financial situation or living circumstances have improved or changed, this may also lead to a reduction in housing benefit. You are obliged to inform the housing benefit authority immediately of any changes that could lead to a reduction in housing benefit.

After you have applied for an increase in housing benefit, you will receive a decision from your housing benefit authority. If you feel that your rights have been infringed by this decision, you can lodge an appeal against it.

If you intend to lodge an appeal against the decision of the housing benefit authority, you must do so within one month of being notified of the decision.

The same applies if you wish to appeal against the decision.
