You have a driving license from a country of the European Union or the European Economic Area and have moved to Germany? Then you need to have your driver's license rewritten if an extension is pending.
If you hold a driver's license from a country in the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) and have moved to Germany, you must have your driver's license transferred in the following cases:
- the validity of your driver's license ends,
- the validity of individual driving license classes ends.
In the case of driving license classes that are limited in time in Germany (classes C and D as well as corresponding subclasses and trailer classes), the German period of validity applies. This also applies if no or longer periods are entered in the foreign driver's license.
EU/EEA driving license for non-harmonized classes:
If you wish to drive a motor vehicle in Germany, you must have your driver's license transferred.
For EU/EEA driving licenses of harmonized classes (classes AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE):
You do not need a transcription.
- valid identity card or passport (with current confirmation of residence, if applicable)
- current biometric photo (size 45mm x 35mm, portrait format, frontal)
- valid driving license of an EU or EEA country
The fee is based on the Fee Regulations for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt).
If the driver's license is sent directly to the home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.
- Driver's license transfer from the EU and the EEA
- Transcription required if renewal of driving license or individual driving license classes (C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE) is pending after moving to Germany
- EU/EEA driving licenses of harmonized classes (classes AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE,) usually do not have to be transcribed.
- responsible: competent driving license authority
