If you have a foreign driving license for motor vehicles, you can have it rewritten for Germany.

Under which conditions the foreign driving license is rewritten depends on whether it is a driving license of the EU/EEA states or of a third country. Holders of driving licenses legally issued outside the EU/EEA may continue to use them for a period of 6 months after establishing normal residence in Germany.

To apply for the transfer, you must appear in person at the driver's license office.

• Photo ID (ID card or passport (if passport is presented, also a current registration certificate from the registration office responsible for the main place of residence)).
• photograph, 45 x 35 mm in portrait format and without border (so-called biometric passport photograph) - frontal photograph, without head covering and without covering of the eyes
• foreign driver's license, if necessary with official translation
• Proof that the foreign driver's license is valid

The fees for the transfer of a foreign driver's license are regulated in Section 2 of the Annex to the Schedule of Fees for Road Traffic Measures.
