Under certain conditions, foreign nationals can apply for German citizenship.

Children born in Germany to foreign parents can acquire German citizenship by birth under certain conditions.

Foreigners who have had their legal habitual residence in Germany for eight years and meet the other naturalization requirements are entitled to naturalization. Under certain conditions, naturalization is also possible on a discretionary basis.

• Responsible: For an individual consultation and application for permanent residence in Germany, the citizenship authority of the district or city responsible for the place of residence, outside Germany the responsible diplomatic mission abroad or the Federal Office of Administration in Cologne.

The Thuringian State Office of Administration is responsible for discretionary naturalization under citizenship law and is the appeal and supervisory authority.

An official form is not required for the application. The citizenship authorities provide forms to facilitate the application process.
