If you are planning a (temporary) stay in non-European countries, you will generally need an international driving license.
International driving licenses are required for temporary stays in some countries, especially non-European countries. The international driving license is a travel document that is primarily intended to make it easier for official traffic control authorities (especially the police) to determine whether a foreign driver has the required driving license for their vehicle.
In most European countries, foreign drivers are no longer required to carry an international driving license. However, it is strongly recommended that you carry one when traveling to Albania, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, for example. For journeys through non-European countries, it is mandatory in most cases to carry an international driving license.
Please find out in good time whether an international driving license is required for your destination country, as this must be applied for at least 6 weeks before the start of your trip. This is particularly necessary if you do not yet have an EU driving license.
To apply, you must appear in person at the driving license authority.
- Application form (created at the driving license authority)
- Official proof of place and date of birth (e.g. identity card / passport)
- If the passport is presented, a current registration certificate must also be submitted
- Valid EU/EEA driving license according to a model to be used from 01.01.1999 (if you are not yet in possession of an EU card driving license, the current driving license will be exchanged for the EU card driving license at the same time), or valid third country driving license with translation if necessary
- Current photo (size 45x35mm, portrait format and without border, frontal photo (so-called biometric passport photo); 2 photos are required for simultaneous exchange for the EU card driving license
