If you would like to work as a driving instructor, you will need a driving instructor's license. This must be applied for from the competent authority.

Anyone who trains persons who wish to acquire a license to drive motor vehicles (learner drivers) requires a driving instructor license. The driving instructor license is issued upon application in category BE and additionally in categories A, CE and DE.

Applicants for a category BE driving instructor license are initially issued a temporary driving instructor license.

The driving instructor license may only be used together with the driving school license or as part of an employment or training relationship with the owner of a driving school.

To obtain a driving instructor's license, a written application must be submitted to the driving license authority stating the desired category. The application must also be accompanied by

• official proof of place and date of birth
• Curriculum vitae with handwritten signature
• a medical certificate of mental and physical fitness
• a certificate or an expert opinion on the fulfillment of the requirements for physical and mental aptitude required of applicants for a category C1 driving license and a certificate or an expert opinion on the fulfillment of the requirements for eyesight required of applicants for a category C1 driving license, which are not older than one year at the time of application,
• a copy of the driving license issued after January 1, 1999; it must be officially certified if the driving license is not presented for inspection,
• proof of the required previous training,
• a certificate of good conduct document type 0 for presentation to the licensing authority,
• a certificate from the officially recognized driving instructor training center on the duration of the training carried out

Requirements:

Driving instructor is a state-recognized, nationally standardized designation for a service profession in the transport sector. To practice this profession, you need a driving instructor's license. The requirements for this are regulated by the Driving Instructor Act. Training and examinations are carried out in accordance with a nationwide training and examination regulation based on this law. The driving instructor license is issued if the applicant

• is at least 21 years old
• is mentally, physically and professionally suitable and there are no facts that make him/her appear unreliable for the driving instructor profession
• has at least completed vocational training in a recognized apprenticeship or equivalent previous training
• the applicant is in possession of the driving license for the category for which the driving instructor license is to be issued,
• the applicant has been trained as a driving instructor in accordance with Section 7 of the Driving Instructors Act within the last three years before the driving instructor license is issued
• the applicant has passed an examination in accordance with Section 8 of the Driving Instructors Act and
• the applicant has been trained as a driving instructor in accordance with Section 7 of the Driving Instructors Act within the last three years before the driving instructor license was issued
• has the knowledge of the German language required to exercise the profession

The fees are charged on the basis of Section D of the Annex to the Schedule of Fees for Road Traffic Measures.

Training to become a driving instructor can only take place in one of the approx. 56 recognized driving instructor training centers nationwide. Not only is theoretical training required, but also practical training in a driving school.

The training is a "graduated training". In the basic level, the driving instructor license for category BE is acquired first. A two-stage application procedure is required for this. Based on this, driving instructor licenses for categories A, CE and DE can be acquired.

Applicants for a category BE driving instructor license (driving instructor candidates) are granted a candidate license for the purpose of further training and testing in accordance with Sections 7 and 8 of the Driving Instructors Act, insofar as this extends to the theoretical and practical driving lessons, if the practical driving test and the professional knowledge test have each been passed successfully.

The candidate license expires either when the unlimited driving instructor license is issued or after three unsuccessful driving tests in theoretical or practical driving lessons or after 2 years from the date of issue.

Applicants who have already obtained a driving instructor license in the public service (German Armed Forces, police) and are seeking a civilian driving instructor license do not need to take the driving instructor test. In addition to the above-mentioned documents, these applicants must enclose proof of possession of the service driving instructor license (e.g. certified copy of the driving instructor license) with the application.

Persons who have acquired a license to train learner drivers in other European countries can be issued a corresponding German driving instructor license under simplified conditions (§§ 3 and 5 FahrlG).
