You must apply for a special permit to set off small fireworks outside the turn of the year.

On December 31 and January 1 of each year, you may set off pyrotechnic articles in category F2 (low-risk fireworks that can only be used outdoors) without a special permit from the authorities. On the other days of the year, this is only permitted for holders of an explosives permit or a certificate of competence.

If you wish to set off small fireworks with category 2 pyrotechnic articles in the period from January 2 to December 30 without a permit or certificate of competence, you will require an exemption permit. The competent authority can grant you this.

• Name and address of the applicant
• Name and address of the performer (if different from the applicant)
• Exact occasion of the fireworks display
• Enclose proof of the stated occasion
• Specification of the exact location, date and time with start and end of the fireworks display
• Distances to particularly sensitive buildings and installations etc.
• Proof of liability insurance for the performer covering the "fireworks" damage risk (confirmation from the insurance company)
• If applicable, approval from the responsible regulatory authority to set off the fireworks

You must be at least 18 years old to handle pyrotechnic articles of category F2.

A fee of up to €300 may be charged for the exemption, depending on the administrative effort involved (e.g. on-site inspections, obtaining opinions). The application must be submitted at least 2 weeks before the event, otherwise timely processing cannot be guaranteed.

The burning of pyrotechnic objects in the immediate vicinity of churches, hospitals, children's and old people's homes and particularly fire-sensitive buildings or facilities is prohibited.
