You must apply to the competent authority for a green license plate for certain vehicles exempt from vehicle tax.

Certain vehicles exempt from motor vehicle tax in accordance with the German Motor Vehicle Tax Act (KraftStG) have license plates with green lettering and a green border on a white background. These include, for example

• Vehicles belonging to certain non-profit organizations,
• agricultural and forestry vehicles and
• certain trailers - exceptions to this are listed in the Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV).

The green license plate remains on the vehicle until it is taken out of service or re-registered in another registration district or until the owner changes. If the requirements for a green license plate are not met, the main customs office may impose a vehicle tax. From this point on, the green license plate must be changed to black at the registration authority.

The documents must be supplemented with further evidence in individual cases (especially because of the tax exemption sought). For further information, please contact your licensing authority.

Information on the fees can be obtained from the registration authority. There are no additional fees for the green license plate.

There is no time limit for the allocation of green license plates. If the requirements no longer apply, you must go to the licensing authority immediately.

Green license plates must be firmly attached to the vehicle; they may not be mirrored, covered or soiled.
