Do you have a disability or illness that excludes the use of ordinary, public toilet facilities? Then the universal key for barrier-free toilets within Europe is a possible solution for you.
Do you have a disability and want to use accessible toilets? In 1986, the "Club Behinderter und ihrer Freunde e.V." (CBF) Darmstadt developed a concept for a standardized key for disabled toilets at freeway service stations, in cities, universities, train stations and many other buildings. The club distributes the so-called Euro toilet key in Germany and other European countries. It can be used at over 12,000 locations (as of 2017). A list of the relevant toilet facilities is available on "Der Locus". The CBF is careful to ensure that the key is only given to people who are dependent on accessible toilets. In addition, the key can be used nationwide for the use of numerous barrier-free entrances, stair lifts etc. to guarantee people with a disability the greatest possible independence in their everyday lives.
People who can generally obtain a universal key are
- Blind and visually impaired people
- people with severe walking difficulties
- Wheelchair users
- people with a stoma
- Severely disabled persons who are in need of assistance and may require an assistant
- Multiple sclerosis sufferers
- Crohn's disease sufferers
- People with ulcerative colitis
- People with chronic bladder/bowel problems
Copy of the severely disabled person's pass or alternatively medical certificate.
The German severely disabled person's pass is considered an entitlement to earn a living if
- the mark: aG, B, H, or BL
- or the mark G and a GdB of 70% upwards
is included.
Other persons who are dependent on barrier-free toilets, e.g. people with chronic bladder or bowel diseases, are also entitled to receive them.
The cost of the key is 23,00 Euro. If you want to obtain the key with the directory "Der Locus" via the locations of the corresponding toilet facilities, the costs amount to a total of 30.00 euros. The plant directory "Der Locus" costs 8.00 euros individually.
To order a Eurokey from CBF Darmstadt by e-mail, post or fax, please proceed as follows:
- Send a copy of your disabled person's ID card (front and back) by post, fax or e-mail.
- As an alternative to the ID card, it is sufficient for people with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis to send a doctor's statement.
- Your details will then be checked to see whether you are eligible for a key.
- The key will be sent to you by post.
- After successful verification and approval, payment is made by cash on delivery when the key is delivered or on account.
Further information about the Euro key, such as a location directory or the purchase of a suitable locking cylinder, can be found on the homepage of CBF Darmstadt:
The Euro key for disabled toilets is a universal key that gives you access to accessible toilets at 12,000 European locations. However, it is not only used for toilet locking systems, but also for barrier-free access, such as stair lifts. If the requirements for obtaining the universal key are met, it can be purchased from the Club Behinderter und ihrer Freunde e.V. (CBF).
