Are you a foreign citizen and would like to work in Germany? Then you need to apply for a residence permit for the purpose of employment.

Do you have a foreign nationality and would like to work in Germany? Then you need

• a residence permit for the purpose of employment and previously
• in most cases, a national visa to enter Germany.

The residence permit for the purpose of employment is temporary. You can have it extended upon request.

• Proof of compliance with passport and visa requirements
• Proof of secure livelihood
• Proof that you meet the factual and personal requirements for labour migration
• Proof of job or job offer
• Proof that there is no reason for expulsion against you
• Proof that you do not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany

Requirements for the residence permit are:

• They comply with passport and visa requirements.
  For the passport requirement, it is sufficient if you have a replacement ID card.
• Your livelihood is secured without you having to resort to public funds.
  Your livelihood is considered secure if you
  • Income in the amount of the simple standard rate of social assistance plus
  • costs for accommodation and heating, as well as
  • of any health insurance contributions.
• There is no reason for expulsion against you.
• Their stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
• They meet the factual and personal requirements for labour migration.
• You have a job or a specific job offer.
• The Federal Employment Agency agrees to the issuance of the residence permit.

Hint: You will only receive the residence permit if you have a concrete job offer. Their admission depends on the requirements of Germany as a business location and the conditions on the labour market. In certain professions or in the case of nationals of certain countries, admission to employment is at the discretion of the authority. In justified individual cases, admission may be granted if there is a public interest in employment.

• Period of validity up to one year: 100,00 Euro
• Period of validity over one year: 110,00 Euro
• Extension up to 3 months: 65,00 Euro
• Extension for more than 3 months: 80,00 Euro

Note: A fee waiver is only available in exceptional cases.

You must submit the application for a residence permit in writing to the Foreigners' Registration Office after entering the country and before the expiry of the visa's period of validity.

If employment requires the approval of the Federal Employment Agency, this will be obtained by the Foreigners' Registration Office in an internal administrative procedure.

Exception: Citizens of EU countries have access to the labour market due to their right to freedom of movement. You can exercise self-employment or employment in Germany within the framework of the right of establishment or freedom of movement for workers. This also applies to other nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA) as well as to nationals of Switzerland.

Nationals of Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea and the United States of America can also obtain the required residence permit after entering the country. The Foreigners' Registration Office of the place where the foreigner will take up residence in Germany is responsible.

Before entering Germany, you must apply for a national visa in your home country.
After entering the country, you must apply for the residence permit in writing at the Foreigners' Registration Office before your visa expires.
Depending on where you live, the Foreigners' Registration Office is the city administration or the district administration.
