Are you looking for an all-day school education and childcare program for your child? The wide range of all-day schools offers very good conditions for providing your child with optimal care and support.
Rhineland-Palatinate offers a wide range of all-day programs. These include compulsory and optional all-day schools as well as open all-day schools. The network of all-day schools has been steadily consolidated since the expansion of all-day education began in 2002 and will continue to be expanded in line with demand.
All-day schools in compulsory form and all-day schools in open form are school education programs in which the all-day program is closely interlinked with compulsory lessons.
All-day schools in Rhineland-Palatinate have become a successful model and an indispensable part of the education on offer. All-day schools offer an all-day program from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. four days a week (usually Monday to Thursday). Within the extended time frame, pupils benefit from intensive academic support, new opportunities to organize their entire school day and an increased opening of the school to the social environment through cooperation with extracurricular partners. At the same time, this educational offer enables parents to achieve a better work-life balance. All-day schools therefore make an important contribution to educational equality and equal opportunities.
All G8 grammar schools are compulsory all-day schools. The shortening of school hours is combined with a compulsory all-day concept in which the best possible support for all pupils is guaranteed. The shortened grammar school period was gradually introduced at locations where this was requested by parents, the school and the school authorities. A total of 20 grammar schools offer the 8-year course of education.
In addition, there are open all-day schools that combine lessons and extracurricular childcare services at elementary school. The childcare offer is voluntary and can be set up by the school authority, a local authority, a parents' association or an independent provider.
Participation in the compulsory all-day school and the all-day school on offer is free of charge. A fee is only charged for participation in lunch. The organization of lunch is the responsibility of the respective providers. The providers of the supervising elementary school are responsible for charging contributions of varying amounts. These can be obtained from the school concerned or the provider.
Further information on all-day school and the legal entitlement to all-day support in a daycare facility for children of primary school age, which will gradually come into effect from August 1, 2026, can be found at
