The national coat of arms is in the form of a heraldic round shield. This is divided by an ascending curved point and shows a red continuous cross in a silver field on the right, a silver six-spoked wheel in a red field on the left and a red-crowned, red-armed golden lion in the ascending black point. The coat of arms is surmounted by a golden folk crown (vine leaves).
With the Trier cross, the Mainz wheel and the Palatinate lion, it represents the three Rhenish electorates, the historically most important territories in the area of today's federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Their outstanding constitutional status made them the most influential and important functionaries of the Old Empire after the German Emperor.
Only state bodies, the state authorities and the other institutions specified in state law, such as corporations, institutions and foundations under public law, which are subject to the supervision of the state and perform sovereign tasks, are entitled to use the official state coat of arms. They may be granted the right to use the state seal and the official shield by the Minister President on the recommendation of the responsible minister.
The state of Rhineland-Palatinate also provides a coat of arms, which can be used freely without authorization.
Further information on the Small State Seal and the current license list can be found on the website of the State Chancellery of Rhineland-Palatinate.
