Upon request, compulsory schooling may be suspended:

• to attend a language course if you do not have sufficient knowledge of German,
• to raise children after the expiry of the statutory maternity protection periods for school-age mothers,
• to attend a special extracurricular course of education (e.g. early attendance at a university with a special one-sided talent; not for an internship).

According to the law, the obligation to attend a vocational school is suspended:

• for civil servants in the preparatory service as well as for new entrants,
• for school-age persons who attend schools for health professions other than medical professions, provided that these schools are not included in the scope of the Lower Saxony School Act,
• for school-age persons who are completing a voluntary social or ecological year in accordance with the relevant provisions,
• for school-age persons who belong to the Bundeswehr as soldiers or who are doing civilian service.

No documents are required.

Fees are charged in accordance with Annex 1 to § 1 paragraph 1 of the General Fee Schedule of the State of Lower Saxony (AllGO).

The best way to apply is through the school attended or to be visited, which gives an opinion. The decision is made by the Regional State Offices for School and Education. The application for suspension of compulsory schooling for the purpose of raising children after the expiry of the statutory maternity protection periods for school-age mothers must be submitted to the school management, regardless of the duration.

There are no deadlines to be observed. The application should be submitted at an early stage so that a decision can be made in good time.

A complaint to the administrative court is possible. In the event of a decision by the school management, in the case of care of the child of a school-age mother, an objection can first be lodged.

Compulsory schooling can be suspended upon request for various reasons.

The responsibility lies with the Regional State Offices for Schools and Education.

This procedure can also be handled by a "Point of Single Contact". The "Point of Single Contact" is a special service offered by the municipalities and the state for service providers.
