If you wish to operate a semen collection centre and/or an embryo collection team that is to participate in intra-Community trade (EU authorisation), you will need an authorisation before starting your activity.
If you want to operate an EU-approved semen collection centre, an embryo collection unit/production unit and/or a sperm depot, you will need a licence before you start working. You can apply for this at the State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (LAVES).
An insemination centre is a germinal material establishment for the collection, treatment, storage and delivery of semen for artificial insemination.
An embryo collection unit is a germinal material establishment for the collection, preparation, storage and delivery of oocytes and embryos.
- Floor plan (at least sketch) of the permanent establishment(s) with legend (designation of the premises)
- Copy of the contract with the veterinarian responsible for the facility
- Application for approval of a semen collection centre
- Application for approval of an embryo transfer station
- Copy of evidence of the expertise of the persons responsible for the subject matter
You will receive permission if
- a veterinarian manages the semen collection centre or the embryo collection unit or the veterinary specialist tasks are provided by a veterinarian who is contractually bound to the semen collection centre or the embryo collection team,
- the personnel necessary for proper operation are available,
- the facilities necessary for the collection, treatment, storage and delivery of semen or ova and embryos are in place, and
- in the case of an insemination centre, the male breeding animals are present.
Once all documents to be submitted have been submitted to the State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (LAVES), they will be checked for completeness and plausibility. This is followed by an operational inspection by the veterinarians of the LAVES in cooperation with representatives of the municipal food inspection offices. If no objections are found, you will then receive permission to start your work.
You need the EU approval/approval before starting your activity. Only after receipt are you allowed to pursue your activity.
