Here you will find information on admission to an evening grammar school as well as on special features of the type of school.
The evening grammar school is an institution of second chance education. As an adult student with professional experience, it offers you the opportunity to acquire the general university entrance qualification (Abitur) after a three-year course of study. They go through a one-year introductory phase in the classroom and a two-year qualification phase in the course system.
At the evening grammar school, you will be taught a high level of general education and you will be specifically prepared for university studies. The acquisition of the highest German school-leaving certificate is accompanied by personal development, which, in addition to your degree, is an important prerequisite for your professional advancement.
The evening grammar school is the right choice for you if you do not (yet) want to or cannot give up your current job completely. Classes usually take place five days a week in the evening and at two locations also in the morning.
Alternatively, the "Abitur-online" model is offered. Half of the lessons are divided into "attendance phases" (two to three weekdays at school) and half into "distance phases" (accompanied learning at home on the PC with the help of an Internet-based learning platform).
With the application for admission, you must submit the following documents:
- a curriculum vitae with a photograph,
- another photograph for the student ID card,
- a certified copy of the final or leaving certificate from the last general education school (e.g. Realschule) and, if applicable, from a vocational school,
- certified copies of a professional diploma after completion of training or other certificates of at least two years of gainful employment,
- a certificate of your current professional activity.
In order to be admitted to the evening grammar school, you must meet the following requirements:
- They reach the age of 19 in the first half of the school year in which they are admitted.
- You have obtained the lower secondary school leaving certificate or an equivalent qualification.
- You can provide proof of completed vocational training or regular employment lasting at least two years. The periods of a total of 24 months of full-time employment do not have to be consecutive and can also be calculated from periods of part-time employment. Periods of housekeeping, voluntary service and periods of absence (unemployment) can also be recognised.
- You have not already tried an Abitur exam more than once – even in another federal state – without success.
- You are currently in gainful employment or are registered as unemployed with the Federal Employment Agency.
There are no fees and only small additional costs (loan fee for school books, purchase of a calculator, consumables, excursion costs).
- You apply directly to the evening grammar school of your choice and prove with the necessary documents that you meet the requirements (see above). After the initial contact, there is usually a consultation with the school management.
- With a lower secondary school leaving certificate, you must first take part in a one-year preparatory course, which begins on 1 February and comprises 14 hours per week of evening lessons on usually three days of the week. Upon successful completion, you will be admitted to the introductory phase. Upon successful completion of the introductory phase, you will acquire the Extended Secondary School Certificate I and will be placed in the qualification phase.
- With the Extended Secondary School Leaving Certificate I obtained in the first chance of education, you can be admitted directly to the qualification phase.
- With a technical college entrance qualification, you can also enter the qualification phase directly, provided that you can prove sufficient knowledge of a second foreign language.
