Do you need a residence permit to look for a training place in order to complete qualified vocational training? You can obtain this under certain conditions.

You can obtain a residence permit for the purpose of looking for a training place if you would like to complete qualified vocational training in Germany but have not yet found a training place. Qualified vocational training is defined as vocational training in a state-recognized or comparable regulated occupation that lasts at least 2 years.

You should be under the age of 35 and must be able to support yourself and pay your health insurance without claiming public benefits.

You can take up employment of up to 20 hours per week during your stay. Trial employment is possible for up to two weeks.

You will receive a residence permit if you:

• have sufficient German language skills at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
• have a school-leaving certificate that gives you access to higher education or a degree from a German school abroad

The residence permit to look for a training place to carry out qualified vocational training is limited in time. It can be issued for a maximum of 9 months.

If you have not yet reached the age of 18, you will need the consent of your legal guardians for your stay to apply for a university place.

The procedure at the Foreigners' Registration Office is usually conducted in German.

• Appeal against the decision of the immigration authority within one month of notification
• Legal action before the court named in the objection notice if the objection is not upheld

• An appeal against a negative decision of the Foreigners' Registration Office can be brought before the competent administrative court.

• Persons from abroad who have not yet reached the age of 35 and wish to complete qualified vocational training in Germany but have not yet found a training position can obtain a residence permit to look for training
• they must:
  • have sufficient German language skills at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR),
  • prove that they are able to support themselves and
  • have a school-leaving certificate that entitles them to enter higher education or
  • have a degree from a German school abroad
• the residence permit is a temporary residence permit. It is issued for a maximum of 9 months, extension is excluded
• the residence permit entitles the holder to work up to 20 hours per week and for trial employment of up to two weeks in total
• A fee is charged for the issue of the residence permit. The time and form of payment vary depending on the authority
