If you need to have your inherited weapons blocked, you must report this to the relevant firearms authority.

If you have inherited weapons and/or ammunition that require a licence, do not have a weapon possession card and cannot prove that you have a need to possess the inherited weapons, you must render the inherited weapons unusable or have them fitted with a state-of-the-art blocking system. Ammunition requiring a licence must be rendered unusable or handed over to an authorised person.

The locking system must be installed by a recognized gun dealer or gunsmith. They will also provide you with proof of installation. The testing of conformity and approval of newly developed blocking systems in accordance with the Technical Guideline – Blocking Systems for Hereditary Weapons – is carried out by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig. If there is no state-of-the-art locking system on the market for one or more inherited weapons, you can apply for an exemption from the obligation to secure all inherited weapons with a state-of-the-art locking system.

Identity card or passport (copy)

Proof of installation of a blocking system or proof that there is no blocking system on the market.

They have inherited weapons.

You have had a state-of-the-art blocking system installed in your hereditary weapon(s) or can prove that there is no corresponding blocking system on the market for all hereditary weapons.

You must notify the competent firearms authority of the installation of the blocking system or apply for an exemption from the obligation to install the blocking system. Submit the notification or application along with the required documents.

There is no deadline.

In order to be able to fill out the notification or application more quickly, you can use the NWR identification numbers (NWR-ID):

Your personal NWR ID (P or F NWR ID) for your personal information

the Permit-NWR-ID for the Weapons Permit (E-NWR-ID)

the weapon or weapon part NWR ID (W or T-NWR ID).

You can obtain the NWR IDs upon application to the responsible weapons authority.

• Notification of the installation of a blocking system for inherited weapons
• Inherited weapons must be fitted with a blocking system if the heir cannot prove a need under firearms legislation
• Blocking is not required if the heir has other weapons requiring a license
• Blocking systems may only be installed by the holder of a firearms manufacturing license or firearms trading license who also issues corresponding proof.
• If no blocking systems are available on the market for the inherited firearms, then proof is also required from the holder of a firearms manufacturing license or firearms trading license
