Studying with a vocational qualification (without a school-based university entrance qualification): If you meet certain requirements, you can gain access to certain courses of study without a school-based higher education entrance qualification.

If you want to study and do not have a school-based university entrance qualification, you can gain access to study at a higher education institution in the state on the basis of your professional qualifications and if you meet certain requirements. In Lower Saxony, there are two different ways of access: via a completed master craftsman's or technician's examination or comparable advancement qualification, or at least three years of state-recognised vocational training in a field related to the desired course of study and at least three years of full-time professional experience in this profession. You can get advice from the university of your choice on which path is right for you. This depends on your desired course of study, your school leaving certificate and your professional qualifications.

As a rule, the following documents must be submitted for the examination of the prerequisites (differences are possible depending on the university):

• Current course of study
• Certificate of completion of vocational training (officially certified copy)
• Certificates of other professional qualifications and/or further education qualifications (officially certified copy)
• complete proof of the type, duration and place of employment
• Proof of further training including time

• Option 1: You have successfully completed a master craftsman's examination or a comparable advanced qualification, for example as a technician, state-approved educator or IHK host. Which advancement qualification is recognised is checked on a case-by-case basis by the respective university.
• Option 2: You have successfully completed at least three years of state-recognised vocational training and then worked full-time in the profession you have learned for at least three years.

In principle, there are no costs for the examination of the prerequisites by the universities (exceptions are possible depending on the university)

You must clarify whether you have a professional qualification with the respective university of your choice:

• Find out more about the procedure and the possibilities of counselling on the website of the respective university
• The requirements will be checked at the time of application.
• The possibility and type of university entrance for those with vocational qualifications is determined at the university.
• Information and advice can be obtained in advance from the university's Central Student Advisory Service.

Enquiries regarding the admission of professionally qualified persons to higher education and the examination of their requirements can be made at any time. An application must be submitted during the application period.

If access to higher education is not possible via the professional qualification for the desired course of study or if there is no university entrance qualification, a rejection will be made (as part of an application or admission procedure). An appeal may be lodged against them within one month of receipt of the decision.
