The first law exam concludes your law studies at university.
It is divided into 2 examinations:

The state compulsory subject examination

The university specialization examination
The compulsory state examination counts for 70% of the overall grade. It includes a written and an oral part.
The specialization examination counts for 30% of the overall grade. It also includes a written and an oral part.
You can decide on the order of the two examinations.
The first state law examination is the basis for the preparatory service and therefore also for the second state law examination.

For the compulsory subject examination, you must also submit a certificate of enrollment from Martin Luther University for the last two semesters prior to the examination
- Successful university intermediate examination
- You have completed the minimum period of study (2 years)
- Successful participation in the exercises for advanced students in civil law, criminal law and public law
- Successful participation in a foreign-language jurisprudence course, a jurisprudence-oriented language course or successful engagement with jurisprudential subjects in a foreign language (e.g. foreign-language moot court or study abroad)
- Successful participation in a law course in which practice-relevant interdisciplinary key qualifications are taught
There are no fees for first-time admission.
There is a fee of € 300 for the repeat examination to improve grades after passing the examination for the first time.
For the first round of the compulsory subject examination, you must submit the application between November 1 and November 30 of the previous year.
For the 2nd examination round, you must submit the application between May 1 and May 31 of the same year
You can apply to retake the compulsory state examination in order to improve your grade.
