Fahrerlaubnis: Erteilung

If you want to drive a motor vehicle in Germany, you need a driving license. The driving licence is issued in certain categories and must be proven by a driving licence.

• Copy of the Id
• If applicable, copy of the driver's license (in case of extensions)
• original signature on a specific form
• Current biometrics-compatible photograph, in passport format (45 x 35 mm) in portrait format, frontal shot without border, without headgear and without covering the eyes
• Proof of suitability
  • for category AM, A1, A2, A, L, T, B, BE, Abe (class A limited):
    • First aid certificate
    • Eye test
  • for categories C1, C1E, C and CE:
    • First aid certificate
    • ophthalmological report
    • medical opinion
  • for categories D1, D1E, D and DE:
    • First aid certificate
    • ophthalmological report
    • medical opinion
    • Opinion on special requirements
    • Certificate of good conduct of document type "0"

• Proof of normal residence in Germany
• Reaching the minimum age required for the desired category of driving licence
• Fitness to drive motor vehicles
• successfully passed theoretical and practical examination after completing a driving school training
• mastery of the basic principles of care for accident victims in road traffic, or
• First aid certificate
• Proof that there is no driving licence of this category issued in a Member State of the European Union or another State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area

Fees are charged in accordance with the respective scale of fees of the competent authority.

You submit an application for the first issue of a driving licence. The competent authority will determine whether there are any concerns about your suitability. This takes a certain amount of time, which is why the application should be submitted at the latest at the beginning of the driving school training. Only after the examination of the applicant can the inspection order be issued.

The application shall lapse if the theory test has not been passed within 12 months of receipt of the test order or the practical test has not been passed within 12 months of passing the theory test. As a rule, the driving licence is handed over upon passing the driving test.

The application for a driving licence should be submitted at the latest at the start of the driving school training.
