The tasks of the authorised district chimney sweep range from the initial acceptance during the construction or modification of combustion plants to the implementation of fireplace inspections and event-related inspections as well as the determination of the chimney sweep work required in the specific individual case (fireplace notice) to the monitoring of the fulfilment of the owner's obligations and the implementation of substitute measures at the instigation of the competent authority.

In order to be appointed as a district chimney sweep, you must meet the legal requirements for the independent practice of the chimney sweeping trade and, on the basis of the application documents submitted

• your aptitude,
• your qualification and
• your professional performance.

The fees are levied by the authorized district chimney sweep on the basis of the sweeping and inspection regulations and are to be borne by the property owner or by the community of apartment owners.

Once you have submitted the application and all documents are complete, the competent authority will check whether you meet all the requirements.

If you meet all the requirements, the competent authority will rank the applicants and make a selection between them.

The appointment is then made ex officio and must be made public. The Federal Office of Economics and Export Control will then be notified for entry in the chimney sweep register.

From 2013, homeowners will be able to choose which chimney sweep they want to commission to carry out the regular sweeping, inspection and measuring work required by law. The chimney sweep register kept by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control enables a quick and unbureaucratic determination of which chimney sweep company is authorized to carry out state-prescribed chimney sweeping work.

• The appointment of the authorized district chimney sweep is limited to seven years, but ends at the latest at the end of the month in which the appointed person reaches the age of 67.
