An official voters' register is kept by the municipality for each electoral district. In principle, eligible voters who are registered in the municipality with their main residence on the 42nd day before the election are officially entered in the voters' register and receive a polling card no later than the 21st day before the election.
If you have not received a polling card by the 21st day before the election, you should immediately check with your local authority whether you are on the electoral roll. If this is not the case, you can apply to be entered.
If your circumstances are different, e.g. you moved to the municipality after the 42nd day before the election or your permanent residence is a secondary residence, please contact the municipal electoral authority immediately.
All Germans who on election day
- have reached the age of eighteen
- have lived in the federal territory for at least three months or otherwise usually reside there
and
- are not excluded from the right to vote.
You can inspect the electoral roll of your city or municipality on working days from the 20th to the 16th day before the election during the general opening hours of your municipal administration.
If you have not been included in the electoral roll, you must immediately apply in writing or in person to be included in the electoral roll. The municipal administration will then check again whether you are eligible to vote in the upcoming election. .
Your informal written application should contain the following information:
- Your surname,
- your first names
- Your date of birth,
- your home address,
- your signature
- and the wording "Objection to the electoral roll and application for entry in the electoral roll"
If your objection is upheld and you are subsequently entered on the electoral roll, you will receive an election notification immediately. If the municipal administration determines that your objection cannot be upheld, you will also be notified immediately.
You can apply to be entered in the electoral roll up to the 21st day before the election at the latest; after this date, a change is only possible if an objection is made in good time or in cases of obvious inaccuracy ex officio.
