Training assistance (BAföG) enables young people to complete a school or university education.

The BAföG training grant enables young people to complete a school or university education that matches their abilities and interests, regardless of their social and economic situation.

You can receive educational support if, as a pupil or student, you cannot otherwise raise the necessary funds for your living expenses and education.

If you are in need, the amount of funding depends on your income and assets and the income of your parents, spouse or registered partner. Funding is generally family-dependent.

• Formal application
• School certificate, certificate of enrollment or proof of internship
• Proof of income from parents and, if applicable, spouse or partner
• Tax assessment notice from the calendar year before last

if no tax assessment notice is available:

• Printout of the electronic income tax statement from the calendar year before last
• If applicable, certificate from the relevant tax office on tax-free annual income from the calendar year before last

The responsible office will inform you if further documents are required.

General requirements:

• German citizen
  Foreign citizen depending on residence status
• You must not be older than 30 at the start of your training (exceptions possible for over 30-year-olds)
• Your own income and assets as well as the income of your parents and, if applicable, your spouse or registered partner are not sufficient to finance your education

A distinction is made between the following cases:

1. Initial application: parent-dependent and parent-independent funding
2. Repeat application: parent-dependent and parent-independent funding
3. Update applications

Depending on the type of educational support, there may be further requirements.

There are no costs.

You must pay back the portion of BAföG granted as a loan (50%) after your studies (max. 10,010 euros).

Student BAföG does not have to be repaid as a full grant without a loan component.

If you want to apply for BAföG to attend a school, you usually have to submit your application to the Office for Educational Assistance in whose district your parents have their permanent residence. The offices for educational support are located at the district administrations and the administrations of the independent cities.

If you wish to apply for BAföG for a course of study, you must submit your application to the Office for Educational Support at the respective university.

If you want to apply for BAföG for an internship, the responsibility depends on whether the internship is related to school or university attendance. The office responsible for funding school or university education is also responsible for funding the internship.

If you want to apply for BAföG for an education abroad (school, university or a related internship), please contact the central international offices for educational support (which vary depending on the destination country).

Up to 10 weeks if the complete documentation is available (if no final decision can be made within this time, the offices are legally obliged to make payment subject to reservation).

You will receive BAföG at the earliest from the beginning of the month in which you start your training, but only once you have submitted an application. The date of receipt of the application is the date of application.

Training assistance is generally granted for a period of twelve months. After this period, you must submit an application for further funding. To avoid interruptions in payment, you should submit the application for continued funding at least two months before the end of the approval period of the previous application.

If the responsible Office for Educational Support has any questions for you or still needs documents, it will write to you. Once your application is complete and processing has been completed, you will receive a notification by post.
