The secondary school comprises grades 7 to 10. It provides basic and advanced general education and includes the course for the acquisition of the advanced vocational training entrance qualification (EWC) and the course for the acquisition of the technical secondary school entrance qualification (FOR). In addition to a secure basic education, the secondary school has the task of promoting the strengths and talents of the pupils entrusted to it, but also of providing help with learning difficulties. A special task of the secondary school is to impart qualifications and competencies for later professional development.
Secondary schools can determine their own organisation of lessons within a certain framework. There are secondary schools that group their pupils into classes after the degree they are aiming for (cooperatively organised secondary school) and secondary schools that use a course system with two levels in some subjects (integratively organised secondary school).

With the admission to secondary school, a child's educational path is continued with the aim of achieving a school leaving certificate. The following school-leaving qualifications are possible:
- Secondary school leaving certificate (in Brandenburg, the vocational training entrance qualification – BBR)
- Extended lower secondary school leaving certificate (in Brandenburg, the Extended Vocational Training Entrance Qualification – EWC)
- Realschulabschluss (in Brandenburg, the Fachoberschulreife – FOR)
At the end of grade 10, the Fachoberschulreife with the right to attend the upper secondary school can also be acquired at this type of school, so that there is also the possibility of acquiring the general university entrance qualification.
The primary schools provide the respective forms, which can also be downloaded online from the MBJS website.
