Compulsory schooling in Brandenburg begins for all children in the year in which they reach the age of six by September 30. If your child turns six between October 1 and December 31 and you would like your child to start school in this year, please submit an application to the relevant school as part of the school registration process.

As a rule, the application must be submitted by the end of February at the responsible elementary school The specific day is announced each year. In justified exceptional cases, children who reach the age of six after December 31 but before August 1 of the following year may also be admitted to the school on August 1.

The procedure for admission to elementary school takes place in the year before school enrollment:

• Sept/Oct - language assessment in the daycare center

• Oct/April - school medical examination

• Dec./Feb. - registration at primary school/application for deferral from school attendance, application to attend a school other than the responsible school

• By April 30 - Parents notify the responsible elementary school of admission to an independent school

• End of May - Notification of admission or deferral by the elementary school

• End of May - notification of admission or deferral by the elementary school

All children who reach the age of six by September 30 are required to attend school on August 1 of the same calendar year.

Children who turn six in the period from October 1 to December 31 can be admitted to school in the same year if parents submit a corresponding application to the responsible school. In justified exceptional cases , children who turn six after December 31 but before August 1 of the following year may also be admitted to school on August 1.
