The Gesamtschule with gymnasialer Oberstufe comprises grades 7 to 13. It provides a basic, extended or in-depth general education and includes the course leading to the extended vocational training maturity (EWC), the course leading to the Fachoberschulreife (FOR) and the course leading to the general higher education entrance qualification. The comprehensive school bundles the objectives of the different educational programmes and types of school. It is an "integrated school". This is advantageous for those students whose further school or professional career only becomes apparent later.
In addition to a solid basic education, the comprehensive school must therefore also provide in-depth education for all pupils who want to attend an upper secondary school. For this reason, in addition to classroom instruction in some subjects, performance-differentiated instruction is given at the comprehensive school in specialist performance courses at two levels (basic and extension courses). The number of advanced courses is slowly increasing. In grade 7 it is the subjects mathematics and first foreign language / English, at the latest from grade 9 the subjects German as well as chemistry and / or physics are added. The performance evaluation by grades is supplemented by points and thus enables a more differentiated evaluation of student performance.

The Ü7 procedure covers the respective 2nd half of the school year, the corresponding schedules are published on the MBJS website or in the Official Journal.
The specific dates can be found in the schedule, which are adjusted annually to the course of the respective school year.
With admission to a comprehensive school, a child's educational path is continued with the aim of achieving a school leaving certificate. The following school leaving certificates are possible:
- Hauptschulabschluss (in Brandenburg the vocational training maturity – BBR)
- Extended lower secondary school leaving certificate (in Brandenburg the Extended Vocational Training Maturity – EWC)
- Realschulabschluss (in Brandenburg the Fachoberschulreife – FOR
At the end of grade 10, the Fachoberschulreife can also be acquired at this type of school with the right to attend the gymnasiale Oberstufe, so that there is also the possibility to acquire the general higher education entrance qualification.
The primary schools provide the respective forms, which can also be downloaded online from the pages of the MBJS.
