The First State Examination in Law (EJP) consists of the compulsory state examination (= First State Examination in Law, EJS), which is conducted by the State Judicial Examination Office, and the university specialization examination (= University Examination in Law, JUP) to be taken at the respective university.
There are two examination dates per year for the First State Examination in Law (compulsory state examination). Students who wish to take the examination must register for it.

Please compile the documents in the following order in a PDF file and upload them at the end of the application process via the online form.
- Certificate of study progress issued for the current semester (if applicable, additionally from previously attended universities) and, if applicable, proof of exmatriculation
- Proof of performance or corresponding confirmation from the university that you have passed the following courses (§ 24 JAPO):
- Civil law for advanced students
- Criminal law for advanced students
- Public law for advanced students
- Foreign-language law course or law-oriented language course in accordance with Section 24 (2) JAPO
- Certificate of the university law examination, if this examination has already been successfully passed
- Only for free trial participants who wish to prove the requirements for non-credit of semesters in accordance with § 37 para. 2 sentence 1 nos. 2, 3 or 4 JAPO:
- Certificate of successful completion of additional training or confirmation of moot court participation or confirmation of law clinic participation (Section 37 (2) sentence 1 no. 3 JAPO)
- Proof of committee activity (Section 37 (2) sentence 1 no. 4 JAPO)
- Disability certificate and medical certificate (§ 37 para. 2 sentence 1 no. 2 JAPO)
- Only for free trial participants who have interrupted their studies due to leave of absence: Proof must be enclosed for each semester of leave.
- Certificate(s) of achievement in foreign or international law acquired during studies abroad for each semester abroad with translation into German, which you can prepare yourself
- Proof of the courses attended during your studies abroad
- Proof of enrollment from the foreign university
- Medical certificate(s): (The certificate must prove that you are unable to study for at least half of the lecture period. It must also contain information about the nature and duration of your illness).
- Proof of other reasons
- Only for candidates who have successfully passed the university specialization examination at a university outside Bavaria:
If you have already successfully passed the university specialization examination at a university outside of Bavaria, please submit the original certificate from the university or a certified copy by post to the State Justice Examination Office.

Students who register for the First State Examination in Law must have taken part in an advanced exercise in civil law, criminal law and public law and provide proof of this.
In addition, they must take part in a foreign-language law course or a law-related language course and provide proof of this ("foreign language certificate").
In addition, three months of practical study time must be completed.
Registration for the First State Examination in Law is only possible via the electronic registration portal (see "Online procedure").
To register for the examination, you need a BayernID user account. It is sufficient to register with a user name and password; higher security levels are of course also accepted.
Please compile all the necessary documents in a PDF file and upload them in the upload area during the registration process. If you are unable to submit all the necessary documents with your registration, please send the missing documents to the e-mail address pruefungsamt@stmj.bayern.de no later than three working days after the end of the lecture period for the current semester.
Once you have successfully completed the online registration process, you will receive confirmation of your registration by e-mail. If you have agreed to the notification of notifications in the BayernID mailbox, the decision on admission will be sent electronically. If you have not agreed to this, the decision on admission will be communicated in writing.
Students must take the First State Examination in Law immediately after completing their studies.
Registration is only possible for the next examination date. The registration period begins at the same time as the semester (winter semester: October 1, summer semester: April 1 of the year) and ends ten weeks before the start of the examination.
