Fahrzeugregister; Beantragung einer Halterauskunft

In order to enforce or defend against legal claims in connection with participation in road traffic (e.g. after a traffic accident), the registration authority can provide information about the owner and/or the liability insurance of a vehicle.

The application for information from the vehicle register can be submitted by private individuals, lawyers or public bodies. For data protection reasons, the request must be made in writing with reasons (stating the relevant registration number or vehicle identification number) or in person.

The registration authority administering the license plate is responsible for providing the information.

If you wish to make a claim due to accidental damage and only require information on motor vehicle liability insurance, you can also obtain information free of charge from GDV Dienstleistungs-GmbH & Co. KG (see link under "Further links").

You can also obtain information about your own vehicles from the Federal Motor Transport Authority.

• in case of personal appearance: identity card or passport
• in the case of a written request: a brief written description of the purpose for which the information is required
