If you are temporarily unable to work, you may be able to receive financial support to cover your living expenses under certain conditions.
Subsistence allowance is a social benefit in Germany. It provides financial support if you are unable to support yourself and are not entitled to other benefits such as citizen's allowance. It is part of social assistance and is intended to ensure your minimum subsistence level.
You can receive assistance with your living expenses if you are temporarily unable to work, for example, due to health reasons. This support helps you if you cannot cover your living expenses yourself because your income or assets are insufficient.

- valid identity card or passport, if applicable, confirmation of registration
- Evidence of temporary full incapacity for work in the form of a pension certificate or medical certificate
- Proof of income, for example for pension, sick pay, child benefit, maintenance payments or maintenance advances
- Proof of assets, for example savings
- Rental agreement and subsequent changes, particularly with regard to the rent
- Evidence of expenses, in addition to rent and rent payments, especially advance payments and invoices for additional costs and heating costs, documents on insurance contributions

- You are in need of help and:
- temporarily fully disabled or
- receive an old-age pension but have not yet reached the age limit for the standard old-age pension.
You are in need of assistance if you cannot fully cover your living expenses with your own means and strength.
You are temporarily fully disabled if you are unable to work regularly for at least three hours a day under the usual conditions of the general labor market for the foreseeable future (more than six months).
You will not receive:
- Basic security for job seekers,
- Basic security in old age and in case of incapacity for work or
- Basic services for asylum seekers.
- You apply for assistance with living expenses in the event of temporary incapacity for work with the necessary documents to the responsible authority.
- The responsible authority will review your application and documents. If necessary, they will request additional documents or information from you.
- The responsible authority will check the requirements and decide on your application.
- You will receive a notification.
- You will receive the benefit starting from the month in which you submitted your application.
- You will not receive retroactive payments for periods prior to your application.
- The application is usually approved for 12 months.
- Apply for continued approval in good time (usually about two months in advance) if you still need support.

Social assistance benefits to secure your livelihood are provided by a different office than those for outpatient integration assistance (EGH). The EGH benefit notice is issued centrally by the Integration Assistance Office in the Wandsbek district (W/EH), and the notice regarding social assistance benefits is issued by the responsible social welfare office in the district.
