The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) issues proof of professional activity in the maritime sector. This proof is called in abbreviated form seafarers' pass and is valid for 10 years.
- The ID is voluntary and not a requirement for service on merchant ships flying the federal flag. It is issued on request.
- It only serves as proof of professional activity in maritime shipping and is neither a passport substitute nor an official proof of identity.
- You have to prove your professional activity in maritime shipping with a certificate from the BSH or with proof of activity as another crew member on a merchant ship flying the federal flag.
- The previous seafarers 'books will be treated the same as the seafarers' ID until May 31, 2019 as part of a transitional arrangement and can continue to be used in this function accordingly.
