If your vehicle deviates from the legal requirements in terms of size, design, equipment or other aspects, you must apply for an exemption.

You may only drive a vehicle on public roads if it complies with the legally established construction and operating regulations.
For vehicles that deviate from this, you must apply for an exemption. This applies, for example, to vehicles with a special design or vehicles from abroad for which modification would be disproportionate.

The scope of the required documentation depends on the individual case. To find out which documents you need to submit, please contact the Exception Approval Management Department of the State Office for Transport (LBV) in advance. This is available by phone or email.

The following documents are required in all cases. Additional documents may be required on a case-by-case basis.

• Application with reasons and details of which vehicle/vehicle combination is affected and for what period
• Report from an officially recognized expert for motor vehicle traffic to obtain an exemption permit according to § 70 StVZO
• valid identity card, electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with confirmation of registration
• Registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document)
• if necessary, a power of attorney

• Your vehicle deviates from the construction and operating regulations.

The fees depend on the individual case and can only be determined after reviewing the complete documentation on-site. The basis for this is the Fee Schedule for Measures in Road Traffic (GebOSt).

• Your documents will be reviewed.
• You will be informed of the decision in writing.

The processing time depends on the individual case.

The exemption is granted for a maximum of 12 years.

The decision on the exemption depends on the individual case and can only be assessed and decided after an individual review of your documents.
