The application for an extension must be submitted to the LBV. The same documents are required for this (see important information) as for the first-time acquisition of the driver's license. If proof of participation in first aid training has already been submitted, no new proof is required.
As a rule, the required documents can be handed in to the driving instructor, who then takes care of applying for a driving license at the driving license authority.
- a valid identity card or an electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with current confirmation of registration
- the existing driver's license
- a biometric passport photo 35 x 45 millimeters (without headgear)
- a certificate of participation in a first aid training course (there are various providers, the LBV is not allowed to recommend any providers for competition law reasons.)
- a vision test (for classes A and B; e.g. by an optician)
- the appointment confirmation
- an ophthalmological report according to Annex 6 FeV not older than two years
- a medical report according to Annex 5.1 FeV not older than one year
- a medical report according to Annex 5.2 FeV not older than one year (only Class D)
- a certificate of good conduct (class D only), which must be applied for at the responsible residents' registration office and is not older than three months
- Once you've chosen a driving school and registered, you can usually submit all the necessary documents for your driver's license application there. Your driving school will then take care of everything necessary and inform you about the next steps.
- If you only want to have key numbers entered into your driving licence, please book an appointment at the LBV:
- On our website for booking appointments, select the category "Driver's License"
- Book the appointment "Change of driving license data"
- You will receive an email. Confirm your reserved appointment using the link in the email.
- Your request will be dealt with on-site at your appointment at the LBV.
Driver's licenses issued after January 19, 2013, are valid for a period of fifteen years. After expiration, a new license must be issued. This only affects the driver's license itself; the driving permit remains valid, except for registered expiration dates for C/D classes. Driver's licenses issued before January 19, 2013, must be exchanged by January 19, 2033 at the latest.
