If you already have a Class B (car) driver's license, you can upgrade it to obtain additional driving privileges. You can also upgrade to Class C, allowing you to drive trucks.
With driving license classes C, CE, C1 and C1E you are allowed to drive the following vehicles:

• C: Trucks over 3.5 tonnes permissible total weight (gVW) with trailer up to 750 kg gVW
• CE: Class C trucks with trailers over 750 kg GVW
• C1: Trucks between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes GVW with trailer up to 750 kg GVW
• C1E: Class C1 trucks with trailers over 750 kg GVW, as long as the total combination does not exceed 12 tonnes GVW

If you want to carry out commercial journeys with your truck driving licence, you also need a qualification as a professional driver.

• valid identity card, electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with current registration confirmation
• biometric passport photo (35x45 millimeters)
• ophthalmological report according to Annex 6 of the Driving Licence Regulation (FeV), not older than 2 years
• medical report according to Appendix 5.1 of the Driving Licence Regulation (FeV), not older than 1 year
• valid EU card driving license
• Proof of participation in a first aid training course
• If the driving licence is to be used for commercial goods transport: proof of professional driver qualification

• You have reached the minimum age of 21.
• You have a class B driving license.

• You choose a driving school and register.
• Typically, you submit all the necessary documents for applying for your driver's license to the driving school. Your driving school will then take care of everything necessary and inform you about the next steps in your driver training.

If you obtained a Class 3 driving licence (now C1E) before January 1, 1999, it is valid indefinitely.
Class C1E driving licenses issued between January 1, 1999, and December 27, 2016 are valid until the driver reaches the age of 50.
Truck driving licenses issued from December 28, 2016 are valid for 5 years.
