- After the birth, you will receive a birth certificate from your midwife. You should also place this with the documents.
- For the verbal notification of the birth, which must be made within one week at the responsible registry office due to legal regulations, you present the documents there in person. It is not sufficient to send them by post or drop them in the registry office's mailbox.
- The registry office records the verbal notification of birth, certifies the birth of the child and creates the desired birth certificates. You will receive these by post. The fees for additional birth certificates are paid at the registry office.
- The registry office immediately forwards the application for child benefit to the responsible family benefits office. You no longer have to submit your child's birth certificate to the Family Benefits Office.
- At the same time, the residents' registration office receives notification of the birth of the child from the registry office and transfers the data to the population register.
- The Federal Central Tax Office receives the data about the child from the residents' registration office in order to then create its tax identification number. You will receive these in the mail shortly.
- The tax identification number required for the application for child benefit is sent to the Family Benefits Office by the Federal Central Tax Office. You do not therefore need to inform the Family Benefits Office of your child's tax identification number.
- Once the Family Benefits Office has received the tax identification number, the application will be processed immediately and you will receive notification of the child benefit assessment. The child benefit will be transferred directly to the account you specified.
If all the necessary documents for notarizing the birth and for the decision on the application for child benefit are available, the services will be sent by post in less than 10 days on average. Child benefit is paid monthly according to the letter of the surname. You can find out when the monthly payment is made from the family benefits office of the Federal Employment Agency. If the application documents are missing, the registry office or family benefits office will contact the parents.
In the case of home births, you must report the birth personally to the registry office within one week.
