As a mother or father, you can apply for a mother/father-child treatment from your health insurance provider.

A mother/father-child measure is an inpatient medical treatment for you as a mother or father, which you can use if your health is at risk or under strain due to your family situation. You can also use the measure alone (without a child). You must apply for approval of the measure from your health insurance provider.

Your health insurance company selects the facility in which the measure takes place and tries to take your wishes into account. These are facilities that are geared to your individual needs and stress situations. You will live in this facility during the measure.

The mother/father-child measures usually last 3 weeks. If your children are under 14 years old, the measure can last 4 to 6 weeks. If there is a justified medical need, you can apply for an extension or a new benefit.

• A doctor has prescribed the mother/father-child measure for you.

The health insurance company must decide on your application promptly:

• no later than 3 weeks after receipt of your complete application or
• if an expert opinion is obtained, in particular from the medical service, within 5 weeks of receipt of your complete application.

Depending on the individual case, deadlines may apply. Your health insurance company will inform you accordingly. Mother/father-child measures can be repeated after 4 years at the earliest, unless an earlier repetition is medically necessary.
