Volltext

The disposal of waste and thus also of organic waste from private households is the task of the body responsible for public waste disposal. In the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the Hamburg city cleaning department is responsible for this.

In Hamburg, the organic waste bin was introduced as a standard bin, where the local conditions make it possible and no self-composting takes place. If you own a house or an apartment, you can order the green bio bin directly in the city cleaning customer portal. If you are renting an apartment or house, please speak to your landlord.

The twelve recycling centers run by the municipal cleaning department also accept green waste from the garden. However, kitchen waste is not accepted there.

Please note general information for the bio bin:
  • Do not put organic waste in plastic bags. It is better to use paper bags or collection containers.
  • Use the free organic waste bags from the Hamburg city cleaning department
  • It is best to place the bin in a shady place.
  • Place newspaper on the bottom of the bin.
  • Always close the bin tightly.
  • Please do not fill in any liquids or cat litter.
  • If possible, pack a layer of coarser material into the bin more often.
  • Wrap wet kitchen scraps in newspaper or use paper bags.
  • Dry cut grass before filling.
  • Use rock dust (garden center) against too much moisture in the bin.
  • Leaves or crumpled paper on the ground prevent the waste from freezing in winter.

The following waste belongs in the compost bin:
  • kitchen scraps
  • Fruit, vegetable and cooked food leftovers
  • Coffee filters and coffee grounds, tea grounds and tea bags
