In Hamburg, more than nine percent of the entire city area is designated as a nature reserve. You can visit more than 30 individual areas in the most diverse habitats in Hamburg.
Nature conservation has various options for placing certain habitats under protection. The nature reserve is certainly the best-known protected area. In addition, there are landscape protection areas, natural monuments and, according to European regulations, bird protection areas and fauna-flora habitat areas, also known as FFH areas. The two European protection categories are also referred to as Natura 2000 areas.
