If you have a disability, you can apply for your disability to be recognised. This will also determine the degree of your disability.
If you have a disability that affects your health, you can apply to have your disability recognized.
As part of the examination, the responsible authority will determine the degree of your disability if necessary. If the examination shows a degree of disability of 50 or more, you can apply for a severely disabled person's ID card.
During the examination, in addition to the degree of your disability, it may also be possible to determine any particular health restrictions. If you apply for a severely disabled person's ID card, the relevant symbols will be entered into your severely disabled person's ID card. The following symbols can be recognized and entitle you to further compensation for disadvantages:

- G – significant impairment of mobility in road traffic
- aG – exceptional walking disability
- H – Helplessness
- B – Authorization for constant accompaniment when using public transport
- RF – Broadcasting license fee reduction and/or telephone connection fee reduction
- GL – Deafness
- BL – blindness
- TBL - deafblindness
- informal application for recognition of a disability
- application form of the responsible authority
- if available:
- other evidence of the degree of disability (e.g. pension notice or corresponding administrative or court decision)
- relevant medical documents, such as reports
- in case of representation: power of attorney or ID of the caring person
- for applicants without citizenship of a member state of the European Union (EU): proof of legal residence in Germany
- Your health has been impaired by your disability for more than six months.
- Your disability affects you to the extent that it makes it difficult or impossible for you to participate in social life.
- Your health impairments are documented by medical records.
- You submit your application to the responsible authority.
- The responsible authority will examine your application. If necessary, the responsible authority will independently request additional documents in order to clarify the medical situation.
- After completing the examination, you will receive a written notification stating your degree of disability and any identification marks.
The processing time varies from application to application and depends, among other things, on the completeness of the information and the medical documents requested.
