If you want to live in Germany permanently, it is helpful if you learn German and have knowledge of Germany's history, culture and legal system. Integration courses can help you with this.
As a foreigner, you have the opportunity to take part in an integration course. In certain cases, you are even obliged to do so. The aim of the integration course is to acquire "sufficient language skills" so that you can communicate in German in everyday life, as well as to impart knowledge about the legal system, culture and history of Germany. Various integration courses are offered.

The general integration course consists of
- a language course of 600 teaching units (45 minutes each) to learn the German language so that you can communicate independently in everyday life in German (level B1 of the GER) and
- an orientation course of 100 teaching units (45 minutes each) in which you will acquire everyday knowledge about life in Germany as well as knowledge of the culture and recent history.
- 900 teaching units in the language course (9 sections of 100 units each) and
- 100 teaching units in the orientation course.
If you are a particularly fast learner or highly qualified, the intensive courses could be suitable for you. An intensive course consists of
- 400 teaching units in the language course and
- 30 teaching units in the orientation course.
To register for an integration course, you need an eligibility certificate, which can be issued by the following authorities:
- immigration authority (eligibility or obligation to participate)
- provider of basic social security (obligation to participate)
- provider of benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act (obligation to participate)
- Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (admission, admission to repeat)
- Federal Office of Administration (confirmation of entitlement for late repatriates)
- After receiving the eligibility certificate, contact an institution that offers integration courses in your area.
- Before you attend the integration course, you will take a placement test. Based on the test results, you will be assigned to a specific course module. You may also be recommended to attend a special integration course.
- You register for the course.
- If you have been required to attend the integration course, you must then submit proof of your registration to the responsible authority.
- You take part in the course and complete each part of the course with a test.
If your certificate of eligibility has an expiry date, you must register with a course provider before the expiry date. If you have been required to attend an integration course, you must register immediately.
