If you work as a civil servant for a German employer, you can get a residence permit to fulfill your official duties in Germany.
If you are a civil servant employed by a German employer, you may be entitled to a residence permit for the purpose of fulfilling your official duties in Germany. You can obtain a residence permit, for example, if you are employed as a teacher or academic or artistic staff member at a university and have been granted civil service status for this purpose.

- You use the online service to apply for a residence permit and upload the required documents.
- The responsible office will then send you an appointment for an interview.
- Please bring all necessary documents, preferably in original, to the appointment.
- The responsible authority will check your identity and documents.
- The competent authority shall involve other authorities where necessary.
- If your application is approved, your fingerprints and signature will be taken and a biometric photo will be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
- The responsible authority commissions an external agency, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your eAT.
- As soon as the eAT is ready, you will receive a notification and can pick it up in person from the responsible office. The responsible office will schedule an appointment for you.
- If the application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice with the reasons for the rejection.
Processing will begin immediately at the appointment if all documents are complete. The delivery time for the electronic residence permit from the Federal Printing Office is typically two to four weeks.
- The residence permit should be applied for at least 10 weeks before the expiry of your still valid visa or your still valid residence permit.
- The residence permit is issued for a period of three years unless the service in the Federal territory is limited to a shorter period.
- If you are a citizen of a member state of the European Union (EU) and are employed as a civil servant by a German employer, the Freedom of Movement Act applies to you.
- Under certain circumstances, you may be required to attend an integration course. This will then be noted on your residence permit.
- By obtaining this residence permit, you have the opportunity to obtain a permanent right of residence (settlement permit) after 3 years.
- German employers who wish to bring a foreign civil servant from abroad to Germany to fulfil official duties can apply for the accelerated skilled worker procedure with the authority of that person.
