If you are recognized as a person entitled to international protection in a member state of the European Union (EU) and you want to undertake research or teach at a German research institution, you can apply for a residence permit. The residence permit can be granted for the duration of your research project.
- Valid passport
- Current biometric photo in digital form (can be taken on site)
- Visa, if required for entry
- Proof that you are recognized as a person entitled to international protection in another member state of the European Union.
- Proof of your length of stay in the European Union Member State granting you protection status
- Hosting agreement or a corresponding contract with a research institution for the implementation of the research project
- Proof of livelihood
- Proof of your health insurance
- rental agreement
- You have a recognized and valid passport or passport replacement.
- There is no interest in deporting you.
- Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
- You have concluded a hosting agreement or a corresponding contract to carry out a research project with a research institution in Germany.
- You have the status of a beneficiary of international protection in another EU Member State. You have already resided in this state for at least two years after being granted protection.
- You can secure your livelihood and health insurance coverage from your income without relying on public benefits.
- If applicable: A declaration of cost assumption by the research institution is available.
- In principle, the research institution must undertake in writing to cover costs that public bodies may incur up to six months after the termination of your hosting agreement or contract.
- You use the online service to apply for a residence permit and upload the required documents.
- The responsible office will then send you an appointment for an interview.
- Please bring all required documents, preferably in their original form, with you to the appointment.
- The responsible authority will check your identity and documents.
- The competent authority shall involve other authorities where necessary.
- If your application is approved, your fingerprints, signature and a biometric photo will be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
- The responsible authority commissions an external body, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your eAT.
- As soon as the eAT is ready, you will receive a notification and can pick it up in person from the responsible office. The responsible office will give you an appointment for this.
- If the application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice with the reasons for the rejection.
Processing will begin immediately at the appointment if all documents are complete. The delivery time for the electronic residence permit from the Federal Printing Office is typically two to four weeks.
The residence permit should be applied for at least 8 weeks before the expiry of your still valid visa or your still valid residence permit.
Changes to your research project during your stay will not result in the loss of your residence permit.
