If you are a researcher who holds a residence permit for a member state of the European Union and would like to work across borders, you can apply for a residence permit for Germany.
The residence permit for research purposes for mobile researchers is issued for a limited period. The residence permit entitles you to take up research activities or teaching activities.
- Valid passport or passport replacement

- Valid residence permit from an EU Member State for the purpose of research in accordance with Directive 2016/801
- Hosting agreement or a corresponding contract with a research institution for the implementation of a research project

- Proof of your health insurance

- You have a recognized and valid passport or passport replacement.
- There is no interest in deporting you.
- You hold a residence permit from another EU Member State valid for the duration of the procedure for the purpose of research in accordance with Directive (EU) 2016/801.
- You have concluded a hosting agreement or a corresponding contract for the implementation of a research project with a research institution in Germany.
- You can secure your livelihood and health insurance coverage from your income without relying on public benefits.
- You use the online service to apply for a residence permit and upload the required documents.
- The responsible office will then send you an appointment for an interview.
- Please bring all required documents, preferably in their original form, with you to the appointment.
- The responsible authority will check your identity and documents.
- The competent authority shall involve other authorities where necessary.
- If your application is approved, your fingerprints, signature and a biometric photo will be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
- The responsible authority commissions an external body, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your eAT.
- As soon as the eAT is ready, you will receive a notification and can pick it up in person from the responsible office. The responsible office will give you an appointment for this.
- If the application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice with the reasons for the rejection.
Processing will begin immediately at the appointment if all documents are complete. The delivery time for the electronic residence permit from the Federal Printing Office is typically two to four weeks.
