If you have a temporary residence permit to pursue qualified employment for skilled workers with vocational training, you can apply for an extension if you wish to continue the employment.

If your residence permit for the purpose of pursuing qualified employment as a skilled worker with vocational training is about to expire and you would like to continue working in Germany, you can apply for an extension. To do so, you must prove that your employment will continue beyond the current period of validity of your residence permit. If you extend your residence permit, it will be limited again, usually for the duration of your employment contract.

  • From May 1, 2025, you must submit your passport photo in electronic form. You can have the photo taken on-site or bring a QR code, which the photo studio will give you when the photo is taken.

• If you are required to attend an integration course: Certificate of successful participation in the integration course or other evidence of integration efforts

• You have a recognized and valid passport or passport substitute as well as a valid residence permit for qualified employment for skilled workers with vocational training.
• The validity of your residence permit will expire in the near future.
• There is no interest in deporting you.
• Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
• You can secure your livelihood and health insurance coverage from your income without relying on public benefits.
• You have a specific job offer or an employment contract and your period of employment extends beyond the term of your current residence permit.
• You are in a qualified job.
• If necessary, you have a license to practice your profession.
• The Federal Employment Agency has approved the start of employment (approval is usually obtained from the responsible body).

• Extension for a further stay of up to three months: EUR 96.00
• Extension for a further stay of more than three months: EUR 93.00
• For express orders, additional charge may apply: 35.00 EUR

• You use the online service to apply for a residence permit and upload the required documents.
• The responsible office will then send you an appointment for an interview.
• Please bring all necessary documents, preferably in original, to the appointment.
• The responsible authority will check your identity and documents.
• The competent authority shall involve other authorities where necessary.
• If your application is approved, your fingerprints and signature will be taken and a biometric photo will be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
• The responsible authority commissions an external agency, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your eAT.
• As soon as the eAT is ready, you will receive a notification and can pick it up in person from the responsible office. The responsible office will schedule an appointment for you.
• If the application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice with the reasons for the rejection.

Processing will begin immediately at the appointment if all documents are complete. The Federal Employment Agency's involvement takes up to two weeks. The delivery time for the electronic residence permit from the Federal Printing Office is then typically two to four weeks.

Apply for an extension of your residence permit at least 10 weeks before the expiry of the temporary period at the immigration office responsible for your place of residence.

If you were required to attend an integration course when your residence permit was first issued, this will be taken into account when your residence permit is extended. If you have not yet attended an integration course, the responsible authority can reject your application to extend your residence permit. If you have not yet completed the integration course, your residence permit will generally only be extended for one year at a time until you successfully complete it or provide proof that you have otherwise been integrated into society and social life.

As a rule, the residence permit cannot be extended if this was already excluded when the residence permit was issued or last extended.
