If you have a temporary residence permit for research purposes, you can apply for an extension if you wish to continue working as a researcher

If your temporary residence permit for research purposes is about to expire and you would like to continue to conduct research in Germany, you can apply for an extension. To do so, you must prove that your research assignment will continue beyond the current period of validity of your residence permit. If you extend your residence permit, it will be limited again, usually for the duration of your research assignment.

  • From May 1, 2025, you must submit your passport photo electronically. You can have the photo taken on-site or bring a QR code, which the photo studio will give you when the photo is taken.
• Hosting agreement or a corresponding contract with a research institution for the implementation of the research project

• Proof of livelihood (including proof of income for the last 3 months)
• Proof of your health insurance
• If you are required to attend an integration course: Certificate of successful participation in the integration course or other evidence of integration efforts

• You have a recognized and valid passport or passport substitute and a valid residence permit for the purpose of research
• The validity of your residence permit will expire in the near future.
• There is no interest in deporting you.
• Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
• You can secure your livelihood and health insurance coverage from your income without relying on public benefits.
• You have a hosting agreement or corresponding contract to carry out a research project at a research institution and your period of employment extends beyond the time limit of your current residence permit.
• If the immigration authorities require you to attend an integration course: You can provide evidence of successful participation in the integration course or proof that you have been integrated into society and community life in another way.

• Extension for a further stay of up to three months: EUR 96.00
• Extension for a further stay of more than three months: EUR 93.00
• For express orders, additional charges may apply: 35.00 EUR

• You use the online service to apply for a residence permit and upload the required documents.
• The responsible office will then send you an appointment for an interview.
• Please bring all necessary documents, preferably in original, to the appointment.
• The responsible authority will check your identity and documents.
• The competent authority shall involve other authorities where necessary.
• If your application is approved, your fingerprints and signature will be taken and a biometric photo will be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
• The responsible authority commissions an external agency, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your eAT.
• As soon as the eAT is ready, you will receive a notification and can pick it up in person from the responsible office. The responsible office will schedule an appointment for you.
• If the application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice with the reasons for the rejection.

Processing will begin immediately at the appointment if all documents are complete. The delivery time for the electronic residence permit from the Federal Printing Office is typically two to four weeks.

Apply for an extension of your residence permit at least 10 weeks before the expiry of the temporary permit at the office responsible for your place of residence.

If you were required to attend an integration course when your residence permit was first issued, this will be taken into account when your residence permit is extended. If you have not yet attended an integration course, the responsible authority can reject your application to extend your residence permit. If you have not yet completed the integration course, your residence permit will generally only be extended for one year at a time until you successfully complete it or provide proof that you have otherwise been integrated into society and social life.

As a rule, the residence permit cannot be extended if this was already excluded when the residence permit was issued or last extended.
