If you have a temporary residence permit for research purposes for persons with international protection, you can apply for an extension if you wish to continue working.

If your temporary residence permit for research purposes for persons with international protection is about to expire and you would like to continue researching in Germany, you can apply for an extension. To do so, you must prove that your research assignment will continue beyond the current period of validity of your residence permit. If you extend your residence permit, it will be limited again, usually for the duration of your employment contract.

• Valid passport or passport replacement
• Existing residence permit
• Current biometric photo
• Hosting agreement or a corresponding contract with a research institution to carry out the research project
• rental agreement
• Proof of livelihood (including proof of income for the last 3 months)
• proof of your health insurance
• If you are required to attend an integration course: certificate of successful participation in the integration course or other evidence of integration efforts

• You have a recognized and valid passport or passport substitute and a valid residence permit for the purpose of research for persons entitled to international protection
• There is no interest in deporting you.
• Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
• You work at a research institution.
• You can secure your livelihood and health insurance coverage from your income without relying on public benefits.
• If you are required to attend an integration course: You can provide evidence of successful participation in the integration course or proof that you have been integrated into society and community life in another way.

• Extension for a further stay of up to three months: 96.00 EUR
• Extension for a further stay of more than three months: 93.00 EUR

• You use the online service to apply for a residence permit and upload the required documents.
• The responsible office will then send you an appointment for an interview.
• Please bring all required documents, preferably in their original form, with you to the appointment.
• The responsible authority will check your identity and documents.
• The competent authority shall involve other authorities where necessary.
• If your application is approved, your fingerprints, signature and a biometric photo will be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
• The responsible authority commissions an external body, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your eAT.
• As soon as the eAT is ready, you will receive a notification and can pick it up in person from the responsible office. The responsible office will give you an appointment for this.
• If the application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice with the reasons for the rejection.

Apply for an extension of your residence permit at least 8 weeks before the expiry of the temporary permit at the immigration office responsible for your place of residence.

If you were required to attend an integration course when your residence permit was first issued, this will be taken into account when your residence permit is extended. If you have not yet attended an integration course, the immigration authorities can reject your application to extend your residence permit. If you have not yet completed the integration course, your residence permit will generally only be extended by one year at a time until you successfully complete it or provide proof that you have otherwise been integrated into society and social life.

As a rule, the residence permit cannot be extended if this was already excluded when the residence permit was issued or last extended.
