Registration for class 1 takes place directly at the desired primary school in January. The exact deadlines will be announced by the primary schools at the end of the year.

According to Section 38 Paragraph 1 HmbSG, children who have reached the age of 6 before 1 July become compulsory school attendants on 1 August of the same calendar year.

According to Section 38 Paragraph 2 of the HmbSG, children born after July 1st can be enrolled in school early upon application by their legal guardians, taking into account their intellectual, psychological, physical and linguistic level of development.

Parents whose children will be required to attend school on August 1st will receive an invitation letter from their regional school as part of the registration round for first-graders.

Your second and third choice on the registration form is intended to give you influence over the choice of school in case the first school of your choice does not have enough places.
